What are verrucas and how can I tell if I have one?

Verrucas are a type of wart that are found on the bottom of the feet. They tend to grow deep within the skin and appear as thicker skin with a hard edge and soft centre. You can have a single verruca or a cluster of verrucas together.

They feel rough to touch and may have tiny black dots in the centre, which are the result of blood clots that have occurred in the tiny blood vessels.

The good news is that verrucas are harmless. However, they can become uncomfortable and painful if they form on a weight-bearing area of the feet.

They are often compared to a skin tag, but they are much different than warts and verrucas. Skin tags are not the result of a virus, but rather they form from loose collagen fibres and blood vessels and appear as hanging lumps of skin.

What causes verrucas?

Even though most people believe that verrucas form because of poor hygiene or foot health, this is not the case. Verrucas are the result of an infection of the human papilloma virus (HPV). They can spread from person to person through direct skin contact, but this risk is fairly low. This risk increases, however, if the top layer of the verruca is damaged.

You are more likely to develop a verruca if your skin is damaged or wet. This is why people often develop verrucas from swimming pools or communal showers. If you have a medical condition or are taking medication that causes a weakened immune system, you are also more likely to see verrucas form.

The best treatment for verruca removal in Leicester

You should always consult with a doctor before deciding on a way to treat your verruca. When you sit down with one of our doctors at The One Clinic, they will talk you through the verruca removal treatments we offer and which will be the best option for you.

The two options we provide at our Leicester clinic are cryotherapy and curettage.

Cryotherapy

This is the most common treatment we use to remove verrucas from the feet and hands. It is a process where we freeze your verruca or wart by applying liquid nitrogen to it.

The extreme cold from the liquid nitrogen helps to destroy warts and verrucas without causing any damage to the healthy skin that surrounds them. The treatment itself only takes between 5 and 30 seconds to complete.

Most patients require more than one cryotherapy treatment to remove their verruca. This is especially true of verrucas that are larger and more persistent. We generally recommend repeat treatments every two to three weeks. You will not need more than six treatment sessions to remove your verruca.

Curettage

For stubborn warts and verrucas, curettage might be the best option for you. Even though this comes under minor surgery, there are no stitches required and the treatment itself takes under 30 minutes. It will also be painless as our doctors use a local anaesthetic in the treatment area.

We inject the local anaesthetic underneath the verruca and around it. The tissue on the verruca is then punctured and broken down using a very fine needle. To remove the tissue in the treated area, we use a curette (small hand tool). This will leave a small wound that we will cover in a sterile dressing.

The treatment area should be fully healed within two weeks. Your doctor will advise you to avoid putting too much pressure on the area and will provide you with advice on how to manage the wound and prevent any infection in the area.
