What causes acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that does not just affect teenagers. In fact, men and women can develop adult acne at any age.

Although oily skin can have benefits such as preserving the health of our skin, it can also be a cause of acne. The trick is to have the right balance. This can be impacted by your hormones, diet and genetics.

Excess oil, bacteria and dead skin cells can work together to clog the pores and hair follicles. This leads to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.

Acne can appear on different areas of the skin including your face, jawline, neck, back and chest. This tends to be where you have the most oil-producing glands (sebaceous glands).

The skin’s sebaceous glands help to lubricate our skin and hair to stop it from becoming dry. However, for those with acne, the sebaceous glands produce too much of the oily substance known as sebum.

Types of acne

When we describe the types of acne in how to treat acne, we look at how mild or severe the acne is.

Mild – mostly whiteheads and blackheads with some papules (red bumps) or pimples

Moderate – multiple papules and pimples on our face

Severe – often called cystic acne because of the numerous large and painful nodules (painful lumps under the skin)

If you are suffering from persistent acne, you should consult with a doctor or dermatologist. At One Clinic, we can help identify the type of acne you have and the most appropriate treatment for it. With our support, you can achieve a more radiant complexion.

Why do I have acne scarring?

Not everyone who has acne will develop acne scarring. You are more likely to see acne scars form if you have more severe acne.

Acne scars appear when your body naturally heals an acne lesion. If your acne spots cause inflammation in the surrounding skin tissue, you are more likely to develop acne scars. The inflammation can lead to excessive collagen production during the healing process, which results in scar tissue.

Your skin type can also impact the likelihood of you developing scarring. People with darker skin tones are more likely to develop acne scars. This is because they produce more melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) during the wound healing process. As a result, those with darker skin tones are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Finally, if you do suffer from any type of acne breakout, you should avoid squeezing your pimples. This can also increase your chances of developing acne scarring.

Acne and acne scar treatment in Leicester

The longer you leave acne untreated the more likely you are to suffer from acne scarring. This is why you should always treat active acne with a suitable skincare treatment.

There are various types of acne treatment and acne scar treatments available, which can help remove or reduce their appearance. Getting the balance of treatments right is your best way to see clearer-looking skin.

At your consultation, we will assess your skin and talk you through the different treatment options. Your treatment plan may include one or a combination of the following acne treatments.

Laser treatment / IPL

IPL or intense pulsed light therapy is not just for hair removal. It works as an acne treatment by using short bursts of light to kill acne-causing bacteria. This laser treatment targets the deeper layers of your skin to remove pigmented cells.

It also kick-starts the production of new and healthy skin cells. As a result, your acne will start to fade and your skin will look brighter and more refreshed.

You may see full facial rejuvenation results start to appear after one treatment. but you will likely need a course of 3-6 laser treatments to see the best results.

IPL works well on rolling scars as it also encourages collagen production to help fill and smooth out the deep depressions.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels, also known as skin peels, are great for treating acne and for some types of acne scars.

The treatment uses a chemical solution to help exfoliate your skin and remove bacteria and dead skin cells. They can also help reduce the amount of oil your skin produces to bring it under control. This can prevent further spots and pimples from forming.

Deeper skin peels can reduce the appearance of acne scarring. Whereas light to medium peels are great for treating spots and spot-causing bacteria.

A course of chemical peels can give you an improved skin texture, as well as a clear complexion. The type of peel you can have will depend on your skin type. This will be discussed at your consultation.

You will need a course of skin peels to see optimal results. You can expect to start seeing results after your first and second peel, but it might take a few months for your final results to show.

HydraFacial

The HydraFacial uses a three-step system to give your skin a deep cleanse. It works for all skin types and can help treat various skin conditions such as acne and dull skin.

It is more than just one of your average beauty treatments. It helps with current breakouts as well as working to kill acne-causing bacteria to prevent further breakouts.

It involves exfoliating your skin to remove dead skin cells. By doing this, it enables topical serums such as hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to penetrate below the skin’s surface. This helps to reduce signs of inflammation and reduce your acne.

It also uses LED light therapy to increase collagen prediction, reduce redness and calm your skin.

For light acne, you may need one or two treatments. However, we do recommend a course of treatments to see maximum results.
