Overview

Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to shrink the appearance of visible thread veins (also known as spider veins or telangiectasia).

These can appear on various areas of the body, more commonly: legs, feet, face and on the stomach of pregnant women. They can usually develop as a result of being overweight, standing for long periods, and / or a family history. Although these irregularities are not usually found to be harmful, their appearance can cause concern as the even tone of the skin is affected.

This procedure is performed by one of our in-house Doctors at The One Clinic clinic. The physician will inject a sclerosing solution into the affected veins which causes the vein walls to swell and stick together. This then helps to divert the flow of blood through to healthier veins.

Over time, the unwanted vein is broken down and absorbed by the body before being replaced with healthier tissue. Sclerotherapy treatment can be very effective when treating single veins, or a larger cluster. It can also be used to treat larger leg veins that have become unsightly or enlarged due to prolonged periods of standing or sitting.

After receiving treatment, patients are usually able to walk immediately after the procedure without any restrictions. The majority of people feel a significant improvement in symptoms after just one session. Some patients may require more than one session of treatment to achieve optimal results.

FAQ

Am I suitable for this treatment?

To be considered a suitable candidate you’ll have noticeable thread veins on your face or body. We’ll discuss your general health and medical history at a private consultation to establish how you may respond to the procedure.

Is this treatment safe?

Sclerotherapy is found to be a safe and effective treatment. The risk of a negative response to the injected solution is very low, and patients generally receive a successful result.

Is this treatment painful?

The feeling people get when having this treatment is similar to usual vaccinations. There may be some very slight stinging felt as the solution is being applied, but many patients do not report that Sclerotherapy is ‘painful’.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Side effects after Sclerotherapy are very minor – a puncture wound where the injection was administered. It is uncommon for patients to experience an adverse reaction to the injected solution, however, The One Clinic will ensure you are fully informed of all potential risks.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

Typically, just 1 treatment session is needed to effectively remove thread veins. If multiple veins need to be addressed, then more than one session may be required and will be discussed at consultation. It’s important to note that although the treatment is very successful, it does not guarantee new thread veins developing in a different area in the future.
