What are skin tags?

Skin tags are small, soft skin-coloured growths that hang off the surface of your skin. They tend to appear on areas of the body where your skin rubs together or where there are folds in your skin. Skin tags can also show up where your clothes constantly rub against your skin.

Most common areas skin tags appear

  •       Neck
  •       Eyelids
  •       Under the breasts
  •       Armpits
  •       Groin
  •       Anus
  •       Thighs

Should I be concerned about my skin tags?

Skin tags are a common skin condition that both men and women experience. They tend to be more common as we get older.

On the whole, there is no need to be worried about a skin tag. They are harmless and only need to be removed if they become uncomfortable, get irritated or start to bleed.

You should also consider removing a skin tag if it develops on your eyelid and affects your sight, or if it feels painful and the pain is quite sudden.

If you are unsure whether your skin lesion is a skin tag or something else, you should consult with a doctor straight away. They will be able to assess your medical history and examine the skin growth to provide you with a correct diagnosis.

What is the best method to remove skin tags in Leicester?

For some people, skin tags will naturally fall off by themselves. This will only happen if the skin tissue dies from a lack of blood supply to it. However, this can take months, or even longer.

You should never try to remove skin tags by yourself. This can cause a risk of infection, bleeding and even scarring.

We would always advise you to consult with one of our doctors before undergoing any skin tag removal treatment. This allows us to look at your skin tags and medical history to decide on the best course of treatment.

The main treatments we offer for skin tag removal at The One Clinic are shave excision removal and cryotherapy to freeze skin tags.

Shave excision skin tag removal

This is a minor type of surgery that we use to remove a skin tag. It starts by injecting a local anaesthetic around the skin tag to numb the area. You can still eat and drink normally after this minor surgery and return to most of your normal activities.

We will use a surgical scalpel to carefully remove the skin tag. The skin tag will be shaved off the normal and healthy skin tissue underneath. This will leave a small wound that is similar to a graze. You will not need to have stitches after this treatment.

The wound should heal within 10 days. The skin in the treated area may look pink or slightly red for a few weeks, but this will start to fade. Your doctor will provide aftercare instructions to help your skin heal. You may be left with no scar or a very small scar.

Cryotherapy or Cryosurgery

Cryotherapy involves our doctor using liquid nitrogen to freeze your skin tags. It is one of the most popular treatments because it is both fast and effective in removing skin tags and warts.

The treatment uses extreme cold from liquid nitrogen to safely destroy the skin tag without causing any damage to the healthy tissue that surrounds it. There is also very minimal risk of any scarring.

If you have a skin tag or wart that is quite persistent, we can use a numbing cream on the area before freezing it.  While some people may see full skin tag removal in one treatment, others may need further treatment. On average, you will need 2-4 treatments spaced 1-3 weeks apart.

Is skin tag removal painful?

Our doctors are experts in removing all types of skin lesions including a skin tag. They understand how to perform this treatment so that they are as comfortable as possible. You may experience some discomfort during and after your skin tag treatment.

As part of your aftercare instructions, your doctor may recommend that you take some pain relief for the first 24 hours. You will also need to keep the treatment area clean to prevent any infection and scarring from forming.
